True Grit is an American western film written, produced and edited by the Coen Brothers. the film stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. Once the film was released it was nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and 7 more. The characters in this shot are all dressed in certain ways to represent their characters in the film. The characters have also been placed in certain positions to show their attitude and personality in the film.
Jeff Bridges is the closest person in the movie poster so when you look at the poster you are instantly made to look at him. This suggests he is the most powerful and dominant out of the characters. He is carrying a gun which suggests violence, aggression, danger and even death. This hints towards the plot of the story and gives us an insight to his character. The character is also wearing an eye patch. Eye patches are stereotypical known for being worn by pirates who are very ruthless and aggressive. This tells us that Jeff bridges' character will be quite relentless and ruthless with what he does. A long grey trench coat is typically worn by someone who hunts. It also makes his character look mysterious. Jeff Bridges is stood side on to the camera which suggests that he is quite closed as a person and doesn't really open up to people. He also has his back to the other characters which might suggest that he isn't very friendly and doesn't really trust people.
The fact that Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are back to back suggests a betrayal by one of them. Matt Damon is similarly stood as Jeff Bridges with his side facing the camera. This again represents a closed off personality. The third main character on the poster is Josh Brolin. He is also holding a gun which portrays him as quite violent. However, he is facing the camera straight on suggesting he is quite open to others and friendships. Josh Brolin however is the only character dressed in very dark clothes that make him blend in to the background. This could suggest that he is very secretive and private as he keeps himself away and hidden from the other characters. The fourth character on the poster is a young girl who looks innocent and seems like she got unwillingly involved with the other characters. She is stood there in a long brown trench coat and, like Josh Brolin, blends in with the darkness of the barn. The young girl is a huge contrast to the old man stood next to her. Jeff Bridges' character looks tough, manly, aggressive and dominant (helped by the low camera angle of the photo) where as the little girl looks sweet, innocent, naive, vulnerable and lost.
The background image looks like old wooden planks that could be from a barn. The colours and lighting in the barn creates a mysterious feel to the characters as they all seem to be wearing dark clothes to be quite secretive. This helps the audience understand the genre of the film because the location (an element of buscombe's theory) of the photo is in a barn which suggests a western genre. The genre of this film is an Western Adventure Drama and their target audience is middle aged men between the ages of about 20-29. The film will appeal more to vicarious people that want to live via other people. This especially works with adventurous people that want to explore and find new things as the film gives the audience a chance to explore western times in great detail.
Steven Spielberg is the executive producer of the film. He is best known for science-fiction films such as Robopocalypse and Indiana Jones 5. This type of genre is uncommon for him but a great movie producer that he is means he can do nearly any genre. Steven Spielberg is one of the many names on the poster. The writing is very thin which makes it difficult it difficult to read. The title of the movie, 'TRUE GRIT' is written in big, bold capital letters. In between the two word is also a bullet hole with blood dripping pouring out down the poster. The big lettering draws the reader in and makes them aware of the film and it's name. You can look at this poster and instantly know the name of the film, the actors and the characters. On the top of the poster we are also told of their slogan, 'Punishment comes one way or another'. This hints at the plot of the story as it tells the audience that what ever happens in this film, you will get a sort of punishment. With the characters holding guns and a bullet hole between 'TRUE' and 'GRIT' hints at the audience that the punishment could be death in some cases of this film.
Paramount Pictures and Skydance Production are also two of the names on the poster. They also have their logo which shows off that the film is made using two top companies to show the audience that they haven't spared costs to make a great film. This shows the Coen Brothers and True Grit as really good because these top companies cannot make every film, and will only be a part of making the top films as they want to keep their reputation high and keep their brand known for amazing movies. The movie was released in late December of 2010 and was a huge hit upon release.
